Our aesthetic at Spruce Floral Designs is all about easy elegance.
The term “elegance” itself is relative. The elements that go into making design elegant are also affected by trends in the industry and what is perceived to be elegant at the moment.
At Spruce, we believe that elegance is beauty that exhibits simplicity, consistency of design, and restraint.
Restraint in design has proven to be difficult in a culture of “more is more”. It would be easy if we showed restraint simply by adhering to a “less is more” principle.
At Spruce, we believe in “less but, better.”
Less doesn’t mean a lack of attention to detail. Every element is necessary and intentional. Everything is well thought out – not only the concept and execution, but also the materials used.
It has been quite some time since we have been able to put together a look that we feel best exhibits our design philosophy and aesthetic. When we finally decided to do an editorial, there was no question that we would work on it with Jaja of Jaja Samaniego Photography and Joyce of The Delightful Miss Joyce. Both ladies have become great friends through our shared passions, values, and design philosophies.
It was an absolute joy working with Jaja and Joyce – from conceptualization to execution.
With tropical flowers being all the rage right now, we decided to focus the editorial on the use of exotics. The beach and bright colors are what usually come to mind when one thinks of anything tropical. Not in this editorial. We wanted to put that preconceived notion of tropical flowers to rest.
We wanted to put together a chic, moody, romantic, and elegant table.
I decided on a color palette based on the available exotic flowers and mood of the shoot, and then layered in the vessels, linens, flatware, dinnerware, chairs, and luminaries. When each item is examined individual: a dried lotus pod, a silver votive, the gray linens; they do little to embody true elegance. It is the cohesiveness of all these elements combined, not too much nor too little, that creates a seamless and elegant table.
